“Transformation doesn’t ask that you stop being you. It demands that you find a way back to the authenticity and strength that’s already inside of you. You only have to bloom.” Cheryl Strayed
I have often turned to the writing of Cheryl Strayed to put words to my feelings and sensings. She has helped me understand and accept myself. She has helped me see that the experiences I found difficult were the things which gave me deep wisdom.
I started to find a way back to myself when I went to esthetics school at thirty-five. In this setting, I had no one around me who knew me, which meant I could start the journey from a place of authenticity. Being fully in a group of strangers meant I could also release myself from demands, interpretations, expectations and ways of being I’d accepted as being me.
Indeed, I felt like I was finally blooming! I was being challenged in many new ways and took every opportunity to learn and get better. I made new friends and took chances because I was determined to finish at the top of my class.
It was critical to prove to myself that I was smart and capable after years of believing I sucked.
The year was transformative. What I had set out to accomplish, I accomplished. I did finish at the top of my class!
The training was rigorous. It prepared me to open my own business right after graduation. I knew this was going to be the next best step.
In retrospect, it was all courage practice for what would happen in my life three years later.
But that’s a story for another time...
