That Burnout Problem

Have you been one of the many who have reached their 'burnout' point? You are quite literally shutting down? I get it. Burnout has been a part of my life at several different junctures of time. My first remembered burnout was in elementary school and most recently in 2022.

Understanding Burnout

Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion. It is caused by long term, compounding stresses. It can happen to anyone, regardless of their profession, age, or gender. Burnout often leads to feelings of helplessness, detachment, and cynicism. It can also cause physical symptoms such as headaches, insomnia, and fatigue.

Most often it is caused by chronic workplace stress. But, it can also result from relationship problems, financial difficulties, or health issues. It is more likely to happen to perfectionists, highly sensitive people ,or those who have been affected by repeated traumas.

The Importance of Recovery

Recovering from burnout is essential for long-term health and wellbeing (obviously). It feels rotten and leads 'no where good' if you don't take care of it. In fact, recovery may require you to:

  • Take time off from work or other responsibilities

  • Practice intentional self-care

  • Ask for and accept support from friends, family, and a professional

  • Reprioritize and make significant changes

Recovery can be a slow process. You will need patience and understanding. No insta-fixes available! BUT, it's worth it to regain energy, motivation, and enthusiasm for life. Please don't try to do it alone!

How Body-Mind Coaching Can Help

In Somatic Coaching we work with the intelligence of our minds and our bodies (embodiment). Body-mind coaching uses a blend of traditional (cognitive process) and body-centered coaching (inner body wisdom).

This type of coaching is able to achieve effective results more quickly. Plus, the latest scientific findings provides research and evidence for why it works (but that's for another post). Here's what you could expect in the coaching process...

1. Identifying the Causes of Burnout

One of the first steps in recovering from burnout is identifying the causes of stress. You explore your work and personal life in the present moment to see where the sticking points are. Then you get support to shift beliefs, values, and behaviours which are keeping you down. This frees you to give your attention to what is good and supportive as you move forward.

2. Developing Self-Care Practices

It's essential to develop self-care practices which support physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. This can include practices such as grounding, mindfulness, simple pleasures and relaxation techniques.

3. Building Flexibility

Burnout can create a very black and white- all or nothing mindset. Clients develop the skills and strategies needed to be more flexible. Some of these skills are effective communication, setting boundaries, and practicing self-compassion. Another strategy might be finding new viewpoints and gaining new perspectives.

4. Goal Setting and Action Planning

A key idea is that every client is wise, resourceful and whole! Which means goals and actions are in you already. They might just be hiding inside waiting to become conscious. Clients create new goals and action plans using embodied practices. Goals and actions are then based on values they hold and what will move them towards their ideal.
